In my case, it is definitely all three!

Depression is caused by physiological imbalances.

Funny aside: I know ama is an ayurvedic term, but AMA=American Medical Association and if they weren’t so keen on pushing pills, we might have a lot of people finding effective help without side effects. lol!
So would you say the root cause of physiological imbalances are found in our eating/drinking, sleep, exercise, and thought habits?
Actually I used to work with a physician who was trained in both western and ayurvedic medicine. He frequently made jokes about ama and AMA!
Remember, the mind-body is one seamless energetic system and physiological imbalances can come from mental, emotional and physical stressors. Receiving a shock which jolts the emotional system can be as disruptive as damaging lifestyle habits.
The way we think is a reflection of our overall balance. For instance, if we don’t sleep enough, eat on the run and over-exercise we would be in danger of depleting the nervous system. In this case the mental symptom could be racing thoughts and the emotional symptom could be feelings of being out of control. Each aspect of our being affects every other aspect.
We suggest beginning to create balance by choosing to do one or two small things that are easy to do and are nourishing to your particular physiology. The mind-body will move in the direction of health if it is encouraged to do so. As you begin to feel better you can add additional changes.
Thanks for writing and I hope you read the book Healing Depression the Mind-Body Way. Our book is about achieving health and happiness!

I am going to say breathing, exercise and eating all change when depressed. I have not always been as attuned to changes in my breath but I know that my lack of exercise and increased eating is a sure sign that depression is returning (or will soon).
Week 7 my answer: We effect change in everything we do from the simplest gesture to the extravagant gifts. How we do these things is also part of the effect. Example: A person enters their place of work and greets a coworker by saying “Good morning”. If the greeting was done in a cheerful manner it may cause the reciever to smile or cheer up some. If the greeting is done as a mumble or insincerly then the receiver may have negative thoughts. AND if the person entering the office chooses to say nothing at all, this too could cause questionable feelings to others in the office. Every choice we make (or don’t do, is also a choice) sends little ripples (affects) into our environment.
Thank you for the response Ginger!
